Fuengirola – A Colourful Town With a Vibrant Atmosphere and a Great Place to Buy Bargain Properties

Fuengirola is undoubtedly one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Costa del Sol. Located just 25km from Malaga international airport and just a 30 minute train ride to Malaga city centre, it is easily accessible by rail, road or bus. This busy cosmopolitan coastal town is attractive to a range of different people due to its excellent choice of restaurants, bars and hotels. The nightlife in this area is lively to say the least as Fuengirola boasts some of the best discos and clubs on the coast. However, further away from the centre you will find a more relaxed atmosphere where families are entertained in local restaurants or you can take leisurely strolls along the beautiful promenade. If you’re looking to purchase a property in one of the more traditionally Spanish towns, yet don’t want to be away from the coast, then Fuengirola has many bargain properties on offer at the moment.

As with most coastal towns in Spain, Fuengirola started out as a small fishing village and gradually built up into the busy holiday resort that it is today. If you venture into the old town, however, you will see that it has retained its Spanish character. Here you can take a walk through the narrow Andalucian streets and go shopping in the independent boutiques or larger stores such as El Corte Ingles or Zara and Mango. When it gets very hot in the summer it is also a nice way to cool off in the shaded alleys of the town centre. Christmas time is a special time in Fuengirola when the whole town is illuminated by magical lights and decorations. Properties located in this part of town tend to be older apartments without a communal pool and are usually occupied by Spanish residents.  However, there are also some amazing front-line beach apartments for sale in this area at bargain prices.

If you prefer the more relaxing way of life and wish to purchase a property by the sea then Fuengirola has one of the cleanest beaches on the Costa del Sol.  During the property boom not many new properties were built in Fuengirola in comparison to areas further down the coast and it therefore retained more of its Spanish charm. The town also has a lovely peaceful port and if you’re out early enough you’ll be able to see the local fisherman bringing in their daily catch. On the other side of the port you will find a sports and leisure marina with over 225 berths. As well as sailing, there is a full range of water sports including scuba diving, water skiing, parasailing or jet skiing. From here you can also go on many daily excursions by boat to neighbouring villages or charter your own private boat for a fishing trip. The glass bottomed boat ride is especially popular with visitors. If you’re looking for a property that is not too far from the beach then we recommend the area of Carvajal.  This is a quiet area located about a 15 minute walk down the beach from the main town centre. As this strip is located right on the beach, apartments in this area usually have the most amazing sea views.

The restaurants in and around the beach sell the most amazing seafood dishes such as rosada a la plancha and fresh almejas (clams) cooked in a garlic sauce. If you continue south past the port then eventually you will arrive at Fuengirola Castle which is a beautiful mediaeval building perched on top of a hill. In the summer, this enchanting castle plays host to many different concerts. Behind the castle is a large shopping mall called Miramar so if it gets too hot outside you can spend the afternoon browsing through their many air-conditioned stores or have lunch in one of the tapas bars. If you like to shop then you must visit Fuengirola market which takes place every Tuesday in the Recinto Ferial (a designated flat ground especially for festivals and markets). Here you can purchase a range of goods from handbags, clothing, gifts, fresh groceries, etc.

As with most towns in Spain, Fuengirola is well-known for its annual festivals, or ferias, as they call them in Spain. Their main feria takes place in mid-October and is located in the Palacio de Paz, the large fairground area where the weekly market is also held. There are many events including theatre, music concerts, Andalucian horse exhibitions and dance shows. In May there is also the popular Feria Internacional de los Pueblos (International Festival) which is one of the most popular festivals on the Costa del Sol. It is a spectacular multi-cultural event that displays the many traditional costumes, folklore and music of the different nationalities and ethnic groups that are resident in Fuengirola. Over 30 nationalities represent their homeland by providing visitors with plenty of food, drink and entertainment in their colourful “casetas” (marquees). The Fuengirola Feria de los Pueblos is short of nothing when it comes to ambiance, food, drink, entertainment and fun.

The week before Easter Sunday the locals also celebrate Semana Santa (Holy Week) with processions in Fuengirola on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.  Nearby you can also visit the spectacular daily Semana Santa processions in Malaga city centre (the largest outside Sevilla) as the frequent train services take you straight to all the action.

There are many things to do in Fuengirola if you fancy a change from relaxing on its pristine beach. Fuengirola Zoo is a great day out for all the family and is located in the heart of the town. Here you can walk through a tropical forest with lush vegetation, rivers and waterfalls and admire the many different animals from all parts of the world such as crocodiles, tigers, lemurs, gorillas, orangutangs and many more. Bullet proof windows allow you to get up close to these protected species or you can watch in awe at them from the bridges and walkways. During the summer months you can check out the “Moonlight Visit” as the zoo remains open until 1am. Just a 5 minute walk from the centre of Fuengirola you will find the Mijas Aquapark which is another brilliant day out for all the family and discount vouchers are usually given out at the airport or in hotel reception areas.

Fuengirola is also lucky to have its very own equestrian centre. If you like your horse-riding then a trip to Racho El Rengo will delight you. As well as riding lessons, you can also go on an organised trek around the local countryside or along the dry river bed.

Fuengirola is in the heart of the Costa del Sol and for the golfers out there it is located just a short ride away from numerous golf courses such as Mijas Golf and Torrequebrada. If you prefer to live near a golf resort then we have numerous golf properties for sale that are close to Fuengirola. It is an exciting town that has retained its popularity with British tourists for over five decades since the resort was developed back in the 1960s.  It is a traditional town that has outgrown its shabby image and is a great place to purchase a property whether you want to live her all year round or buy a holiday home.  Here is where you will find real bargains in the heart of a Spanish coastal town as property prices of apartments and villas can be much cheaper than anywhere else on the coast.
